Hundreds of thousands of VR headsets were sold in the Australian market in 2016. Telstyle, a local tech research group, reports there were 216,000 headsets sold during the year. About 70% of those were for mobile VR, though the PSVR also did pretty well.
Based on the market’s performance up to this point, Telstyle is predicting VR penetration will “reach 25.5 percent of households by 2021” in Australia.
A major factor for growing VR will be the increasing availability of AAA games in the format. Developers therefore need to be convinced to create expensive content for the format even while it has a relative lack of users.
